Dolley Payne Todd Madison was the wife of President James Madison. Dolley was noted for her social graces, which boosted her husband’s popularity as President. She was first known as the President’s wife. A friend to the widowed Thomas Jefferson, Dolley Madison was given the title “First Lady” for her role as White House hostess during his administration.
